Greetings Everyone, I am sure by now all of us have settled into the new year and planning the various photographic events that fill out our year.
Depending on our involvement with our club, we will be getting our images ready for the various competitions at club level and many will be looking further afield. Perhaps you are contemplating entering interclub competitions, maybe national and even international. I wish you every success with your endeavours.
Hopefully too, most of us are planning to attend this year's VAPS convention in Albury. If you are considering entering the Interclub Exhibition, the new VAPS upload system is now live at vapscomp.org.au, and is ready for your club to register as you ready your images, prints and AV's for this years Interclub Exhibition.
The new upload system requires that all clubs enter their EDPI images, Print Titles and Makers along with the AV's that your club is presenting.
The process of registering your club is not difficult and easily explained in the documents located under the Interclub tab onhttp://www.vaps.org.au.
The cut off for entries this year is 20th March, the day of the VAPS half-year meeting and this meeting will be held in the St Peters Church Hall. 371 Neerim Road Murrumbeena, at 1.30pm.
We do hope that all clubs will get behind the new system. It is easy to use and similar to any National or International system where you have to upload your entries.
If you have any difficulties, once you log in, there is a contacts tab at http://vapscomp.org.au that you can use to contact the administrators.
The Convention in Albury is well in hand with our programme and speakers all locked into place.
The entire convention will be located in the Albury Commercial Club premises where you will enjoy top facilities and excellent rooms for the Interclub exhibition and presentations.
The club has several bistro and food outlets within the building for your Saturday lunch.
A big extra this year will be the Stay Another Day Programme, organised by Brian Putsch 2016, convention chair. The details are in this edition of Newsbrief. It surely will be a great post-convention opportunity to visit some of the outstanding attractions the area has to offer.
I do hope that you will take advantage of this programme as a follow-on to the weekends events. I hope to see and catch up with many of you at this year's convention. It should prove to be a wonderful event and one not to be missed.

It's also time to check that email addresses are up to date. Are the right people in your club receiving the Newsbrief? Have you encouraged members to subscribe to their own Newsbrief email? Are the Newsbrief emails being distributed to other members of your club? All of these questions give us a "heads-up" on checking that addresses are correct. Let the webmaster or editor know of any changes. Keep up to date!
Do you open it in your Web Browser? Are the internal anchors and external links working for you? Remember that the internal links (anchors) for moving to other parts of the Newsbrief only work when you have opened your email in your web browser.

One of the objectives of the Newsbrief is to be a service to clubs and hence to members of club. The Albury/Wodonga Camera Club is privileged to be hosting the 2016 VAPS Convention and Interclub Exhibition. We are looking forward to welcoming club members to our lovely city with its many photographic opportunities. The main venue for the weekend will be the Albury Commercial Club located in the main street [Dean Street] with all convention activities located on the first level, namely the images display, registration desk, Auditorium, Workshops and Audio Visual viewing.
The Commercial Club is a fantastic location with excellent facilities for VAPS members including the club café open on the ground floor for extra coffee, lunches and breakfasts.
There is also multi-level parking for some 800 vehicles. You will be assured of free parking at the venue.
Our Friday night social will be at Sodens Hotel, in Albury, with our private dining area offering a relaxing atmosphere and an excellent menu selection.
Saturday awards dinner and
Sunday BBQ lunch will be held in the Stanley Rooms at the Albury Commercial Club. The convention, Interclub exhibition, workshops and all catering will be centrally located in the club itself so, with ample free parking and just a short distance from many of the local motels, the weekend is set to enthuse and inform in the comfortable surrounds of the Commercial Club.
Albury offers a full variety of accommodation within close proximity of the venue or nearby, if preferred. An early morning shoot will be arranged for Monday.
We have our new art gallery (MAMA) and the images of their 2016, $50.000, national photographic competition will be on display at the time of the convention.
This will be a great opportunity to view some of the country's leading photographic artists and their work, you might even find some VAPS members work there.
So do come up to Albury in June 2016. The convention weekend will be a great event and complemented with an additional day or two in the region will make it an outstanding experience for all. So come visit, with camera in hand, the nearby Ettamogah Pub, Kinross Woolshed Hotel, Bonegilla Immigration Centre, Lake Hume, Wonga Wetlands ... the list goes on ... and, if you really want it ... there is also plenty of retail therapy to be had.

Currently there are some very good prices on offer for motels within walking distance of the convention venue, namely the Commercial Club, 618 Dean Street.
The Boomerang Hotel/Motel, 4 km north of the venue, is offering convention visitors special rates. Guests, who book through the Boomerang and state they are with the camera club, will receive a 10% discount on their rooms. Their rates do vary but if guests book early they are going to get a better rate.

Clubs should be assembling their Interclub entries now and making them ready for uploading to the system and delivering Prints and AV's to VAPS by the cut-off date of 20th March.
All AV's must have the standard AV entry form completed and forwarded with your entry disks. There is a one-page Record of Entry form that MUST be completed and included with your Print and AV entries.

The Melbourne Camera Club's Audio Visual Group is again sponsoring AV DAY – Sunday 28 February 2016.
Members and visitors are invited to participate in the third AV DAY Sunday February 28th 2016. AV Day continues the commitment to encourage the art of Audio Visual design and production for Camera Club photographers.
The venue will again be the Melbourne Camera Club's first floor Gallery commencing at 10 a.m. with coffee and tea for a 10.30 start going through to 4.30 p.m. A $5.00 attendance fee, payable at the door, is being charged to defray facility and refreshment costs. Lunch is BYO or available at the nearby South Melbourne market.
'Narration' is this AV Day's morning workshop theme following requests at the second (October 2015) AV day. Two one-hour sessions in the morning will concentrate first on hardware and software and secondly, on the development of your script and the narration recording process. The presentations will deal with these topics and show equipment and introduce home environments you can trial. As well, you can discuss other approaches to narration.
The afternoon session is for watching AVs from participants. Here is the opportunity to gain audience feedback on ways to tackle technical issues and other aspects of your AV production. A selection of national and international AV's may also be shown, if time allows, with an emphasis on the day's theme of good narration.
Two previous AV days, held in 2015, formed the AV Day's structure with a morning workshop theme followed by an afternoon of showing examples of national and international standard audio-visuals. The format and theme of future AV DAYs is determined by those who attend the one previous. Generally, two are held per year with this February's AV DAY being timed to allow participants to put into practice narration for AV entries in the 2016 VAPS Interclub AV competition.
Outcomes, that AV Days support, are the encouragement of having a go, mentorship over the internet of those starting out and arranging visiting AV presenters at camera club meetings. These are all part of what we hope to achieve with AV Days.
The AV Day administrative committee of Phil Ryan (Doncaster), Sue Rocco (Caulfield and Melbourne), Barbara Butler (Melbourne), and John Spring (Melbourne and Macedon Ranges), is an amalgam of experienced AV workers from several camera clubs willing to listen to your AV experiences and help with your problems. Hopefully AV DAYs will continue to attract those camera club photographers who want to learn about AV production in an all-day meeting environment that encourages comprehensive discussions of issues, seeing national and international standard AVs, learning about the latest hardware and software and generally helping each other to make more and better audio visuals.

You are invited to bring along your AV to share with those present. Don't be shy! This is an opportunity to receive constructive critique from those present, some experienced, others less so. Give your current project a little outing and get some tips on how it could be improved.
If there is still time we will show a selection of AVs from overseas to give inspiration.
A variety of styles from different countries, some recognised by FIAP and in the Permanent Collection.

Please spread the word to others who may be interested and let us know if you are able to come. It is particularly important to let us know if you are bringing an AV to show.
On Saturday November 7, 33 members of the Williamstown Camera Club boarded a bus with Canon Collective Ambassadors, Erin Kostopoulos and Jay Collier. The destinations chosen for the event were Eynesbury Homestead, Eynesbury and Serendip Sanctuary at Lara. These provided club members a chance to practice a wide range of photography techniques throughout the day.
Eynesbury Homestead is in a beautiful rural setting surrounded by attractive gardens, historic buildings, ornamental lake and a Gray Box forest. Club members spent their morning taking a variety of images including macro, architecture, and landscape shots. Everyone caught up at the homestead cafe for lunch and to compare notes on their morning before departing for Serendip Sanctuary. The Sanctuary provided an opportunity to walk amongst local bird and wildlife in a peaceful setting. A number of bird hides are provided for photographers to observe the abundant bird life in the wetlands.
Although club members brought their own equipment along, Canon Collective also provided a wide range of equipment to use on the day. Attendees were able to try cameras such as the 5DsR and 1Dx and a range of lenses suitable for the day, from the new 11-24 mm f4 and 35 mm f1.4 to a wide selection of the great whites. The participants really appreciated being able to get hands-on experience with some great equipment as well as having some very knowledgeable people on hand willing to provide tips and advice.
All attendees enjoyed a great day on the road and had fun participating in the last photographic activity of the day - the all important group photo! This has been a feature of club outings for many years and provides us with some wonderful memories.

Public Liability increased to $20 million.
Property in Care, To $250,000, legal liability for damage to rented premises, members property damaged whilst in the rooms, any other club property in your care. i.e. where there has been negligence that caused the loss.
Counsellors Liability, Cover for where the club is legally liable to pay costs resulting from any personal injury/act/error committed by anyone appointed by the club to provide counselling or mediation services.
Member to Member extension, Includes members, guests and visitors to the club in respect to claims against them by any other member, guest or visitor arising in connection with the activities of the club, i.e. where a member injures another member unintentionally.
Professional Indemnity, Covers actions brought against the club and where the club is legally liable to pay compensation or costs for an alleged breach of professional duty.
Volunteers – Personal Accident, Age restrictions lifted on Volunteers Insurance. Volunteers must be capable of performing the allotted tasks. Cover extends from time departing home to return home, for volunteers performing club duties.
(Does not include Motor vehicle accidents where the Volunteer would be covered under their motor vehicle insurance.)
Management Liability (Directors and Officers Liability cover) covers club committees where they maybe sued by members or other parties.

MAMA Art Foundation National Photography Prize – up to $47,000.
John and Margaret Baker Memorial Fellowship for emerging artists - $3,000 fellowship.
Additional acquisitions – up to $47,000 (depending on NPP awarded value).

All applications will be assessed by a judging panel consisting of both internal and external representatives. Entrants of works shortlisted for the exhibition will be notified by Monday 11 April 2016.

The prize winning photographs will be announced at the opening of the exhibition on Friday 20 May 2016.

A Brief History:
Camera clubs have existed in Melbourne since the 1890's and an umbrella organisation called the Victorian Photographic Affiliation was formed in 1908. This guided amateur photography in Victoria for forty years. The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies was formed on 27 September 1952 and comprised of 12 clubs. This has grown to more than 70 clubs in Jan 2016. VAPS is a non-profit association that is entirely self-funded. The Association is run by an elected Committee of Management which is responsible for the operations of the Association, and for ensuring the Association fulfils the objectives.
